Taste the rainbow….chard
I am on a diet.
I hate being on a diet. Everybody thinks that everyone automatically loses weight when they’re vegan. Well, you don’t. Unless you’re my husband and you drop 20lb then complain about it’s so hard to gain weight....blah blah blah, poor me. I have to eat more food….
Can you tell I really resent him right now? If not, you have to say the stuff in italics in a really high pitched whiny voice. Get the resentment now?
Well, if you’re me, you’ll stay about the same weight, then you’ll discover all these delicious vegan goodies (mighty-o-donuts, cupcakes, PCC pizza) and the scale will slowly but surely start to creep up.
Don’t get me wrong, I think I’ve been pretty lucky and haven’t had to be too strict with my sugar addiction to maintain a relatively healthy weight. But the point is, I keep talking about wanting to get super fit and super lean, and my husband is finally calling me on my bulls*&^ and telling me that if I want to get there, I have to make some changes. eg. exercise, and eat right (how annoying of him).
That and I had a patient who had been a vegan for 30+ years who was coming in to have a couple of toes removed as a result of complications from her diabetes. She was fairly overweight, I would say obese, and her issue was about controlling her carbs (mine too!) So no, being a vegan doesn’t automatically make you healthy. And since I have a major sugar addiction and love carbs, I have to make some changes. I would like to keep all of my toes, thank you very much.
So, as you can tell, I have already started on the diet (sort of). It’s going to take me a while until I get the swing of things and I’m going to take the one ounce of niceness left in me and thank my husband for being brave enough to call me on my bull and for putting up with me on a diet. As you can tell, I’m not very nice when I don’t have a steady stream of cupcakes going in my mouth.
Wish me luck! (or my husband although I think he’ll need more of it).
I like Smoothies
I like smoothies because sometimes I’m lazy and I don’t actually want to eat my food, I just want to slurp up a smoothie that will take care of my nutritional needs.

So here is my super awesome nutrition packed smoothie.
1 scoop pea protein
1 scoop chocolate green super food (I reviewed this in a previous post)
Some spinach
Some mixed frozen berries
A dash of orange juice
Dollop of soy yogurt (optional)
Blend it all up, and yum! You can substitute kale for the spinach (I know, sounds gross but you can’t taste it, I swear). The orange juice adds some tartness and sweetness to help with the weird, bleh aftertaste of the pea protein. A banana works also. You just have to have the right combinations of other flavors that will last and overpower the bleh of unflavored pea protein powder.
There you have it, a smoothie full of iron, protein and all those other good vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

YEEAAAHHHH!!!!! Vegans get healthy levels of Omega 3's too biatches!!!!!
Maybe I’m overreacting, but this is seriously awesome info. Do you know how often I have to defend my dietary choices and convince people that I’m getting the nutrition I need?!?
